Game Off 2019 Day 4
After a few days of trying to find a good idea for Game Off 2019, I think I managed to come up with either the dumbest idea...or the best idea: Un-bee leap-able!
You play as a ninja that starts the level by leaping straight up into the air, and then you pull out a giant kite that you use to glide through the air. Your objective is to land in a designated zone on the map. While gliding through the air, you have to avoid giant bees. If you touch a bee or land in an area that isn't the designated zone, you restart back at the starting point but with cash to spend on upgrades to help you glide around better.
It's a really crazy idea! I know! I just came up with it while listening to Jack Stauber's Micropop, and I think the idea has enough quirky charm to go really far in the competition.
Now, the question is: what engine or whatever should I use to create the game? I would love to make the game 3D and have it feel like gliding around as Batman in those Batman Arkham games. If I were to go 3D, I'm thinking that Unity or Godot Engines might be great for it.
However, I have no experience in creating 3D games. I don't know how long it would take me to create really nice looking 3D models. I don't even know what formats are supported by either Engine. I might spend too much time modeling stuff and not enough time on the game. Then I might end up with nothing I can really submit this year; just like when I tried the 2019 JS13K Games Competition.
I could fall back on my experience making 2D games with HTML5 Canvas and JavaScript. It won't feel similar to gliding around like Batman, but it's a much safer choice if I want to put out a game. I can either make it so that you have to keep gliding to the right, or I might use an idea that Jedulz scrapped for his 2019 JS13K Games Competition entry: your goal is too achieve enough height to reach space. His idea was to be an astronaut with an upgrade-able jet pack on his back, and my idea of that would be a ninja that could get better gliders and could upgrade his jump. I could even have the ninja jump off the top of the bee to get more height, and only count a "round over" if the ninja lands or hits the bottom of the bee (where their stinger would be). I'm thinking the glide right version would play similarly to the Helicopter Game, and the height one would play like Doodle Jump.
I don't know. I really do feel like taking another chance, though. Taking a chance was what got me joining these competitions, anyway! I'll keep doing my research into the two 3D engines, though I'm leaning towards Godot for its Free and Open Source qualities!

Hey, I think your game could be implemented in 2d. There's this game in the app store called Paper Plane !!
ReplyDeleteThe title actually has the two exclamation points. It's made from Dual Cat and I thought of it when I read your game description of a ninja taking a leap and flying on a kite to a target area.
The game uses wind as an upgrade and as something you aim for to stay a float.
