The JS13K Games Competition 2019

Hi, I'm Bluzix and I wanted to create a journal of my experiences with the JS13K Games Competition.  Well, that's where I wish to start this blog.  Hopefully, I can transform this blog into my code journal.  I'll be writing code and explaining my logic within my programs.  So, if you're interested in such a thing, go ahead and give this blog a follow, subscribe, or whatever Blogger uses.

This isn't my first time coding, but it would be the first time I used JavaScript, CSS, and HTML5 to create a working game.  My coding experience first started in High School, back in 2007, where I picked up BASIC.  It wasn't the most exiting programming language, but that was probably due to our class not doing a lot of interesting stuff with it.  My real interest started the year afterward, still in High School, but this time we worked with Java and good old Netbeans 7.  I remember learning about Java's Canvas, and we used that to make part of a chess game: you moved a knight around the board, and I tried drawing the available places where you can move the piece.  I don't think I got it working...I don't even know where I placed the source code.

Anyway, I got better during my college years after I completed my BS in Management Information Systems (MIS).  The degree only taught me stuff about SQL and using a few Big Data Analysis Tools like Tableau.  There was one class that taught me HTML5 and CSS3, which was offered as an elective.  However, I was disappointed by how little I've learned about computers during my time there.  Plus, my friend was the one that talked me into going after that degree in the first place.  So, after he dropped out and I completed the degree, I decided to also get my BS in Computer Engineering.

Computer Engineering made MIS look like Communications, but I managed to get through that degree as well.  I was more impressed by it: I learned more about Java, C, Python, Android Programming, and even programmed a few micro-controllers.  There was even a class where I had to set up my own Github.

During college, I got an internship with a small tech startup.  There I learned about WordPress, C# and Visual Studio 2017, ASP.NET, and I created an iOS app using Objective-C.  It was pretty awesome!  However, they lost a contract with a much bigger company, lost a lot of funding, and I was let go.

Now that I'm done with college, I currently work as a full time Web App Developer.  I do a lot of stuff with Adobe's ColdFusion, HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, Microsoft SQL Server, and Sybase SQL Anywhere.  I'm kinda the lead developer there, a lot of the Help Desk employees that I support seem to think I am the lead, but I try to assure everyone that it's due to everyone else leaving.  Yeah, there was a mass exodus that took place in the office, and it was just me trying to maintain everything for the first few months.  It got a lot better when new people joined.

In fact, I got to become friends with my new co-workers, and they were the ones that introduced me to that JS13K Games Competition.  It's my first time, since Orion's Revenge, that I attempted to make a game using code.  This is either going to turn out really well, or it's going to be a horrific mess that I don't even bother to upload for the competition.  Anyway, I hope it is at least a little bit interesting following me on this journey; I'll try to keep them snappy like Yahtzee's Dev Diary.
